    • After planning, the next step is for the company to implement their side by writing software that follows the design. The last step is to put the resulting program on a server.
    • Along with the server software, the company publishes documentation for the API. The documentation is one or more documents — typically webpages or PDFs — that explain how to use the API.
    • An easy way to start using an API is with an HTTP Client, a generic program that lets you quickly build HTTP requests to test with. You specify the URL, headers, and body, and the program sends it to the server properly formatted. These types of programs come in all sorts of flavors, including web apps, desktop apps, web browser extensions, and more.

       

    • The nice thing about generic HTTP clients is that you do not have to know how to program to use one. With the skills you’ve attained through this course, you now have the ability to read a company’s API documentation and figure out the request you need to make to get the data you want. This small learning curve makes generic clients great for exploration and quick one-off tasks.
    • If coding is beyond your current skill set or time constraints, there is a nifty tool we know of that empowers you to easily interact with APIs. OK, you probably saw this coming: it’s Zapier! Our Developer Platform offers a way for you to implement an API that you then interact with as an app on Zapier. Through button clicks and filing out forms, you can implement nearly any API you want.

    • One of the hottest topics in the SharePoint world is the “Death of InfoPath”. Everyone has a different opinion of the tool and its value but one thing is certain, Microsoft is no longer investing in it and hasn’t for a while.
    • Forms are highly ubiquitous for just about any organization big or small.
    • here is a list of forms solutions that Microsoft has provided to consider when evaluating your companies forms requirements.
    • Each Access Web App that’s published to SharePoint comes along with its own standalone SQL database. Since the Access Web App data is in a separate SQL database and SharePoint can’t see it, you can’t create SharePoint workflows as a result.  This is probably the most impactful drawback of the Access Web App solution because workflow is a very common requirement for most forms solutions. As a result SharePoint becomes a simple & limited front end UI to the Access data but nothing more. If you want to build a SharePoint form that involves critical business processes, you won’t be able to use Access Web Apps.

The Quick Apps suite provides the ability to drastically improve native SharePoint forms and address many other common customization needs. As most of you know it’s rarely just about forms. There are often other needs that are directly related to forms such as data viewing/filtering, charting & KPI’s, site navigation, and line of business integration to name a few.     • You can create Access 2013 web databases on any SharePoint 2013 site. The easiest way to try this out is through SharePoint Online, which is included in the Office 365 Small Business Premium and Office 365 Enterprise plans. (Note that the Office 365 ProPlus and Office 365 Home Premium products do not include SharePoint Online).

    • Recently I have been invited by D&B to review a number of their Data Services on Azure Marketplace. At the time of writing, there were 10 data services provided by D&B. The two that I find quite interesting are:

       

    • Despite its name, the Company Cleanse & Match for Microsoft SQL Server Data Quality Services is not specific for Microsoft SQL Server Data Services (DQS). For the remaining of this article, I am going to refer to this particular data service as Company Cleanse & Match.

    • it also provides other information such as the total number of employees, the legal status, the year company started, the line of business, Industry Code and more.
    • Using the data generated by the queries from Company Cleanse & Match and Company Firmogrpahics, you could create insightful story / visualisation just using Excel.

    • Another interesting aspect is they are asking for submissions from the public, and they even provide a template Google spreadsheet, providing a framework for how the public should gather and organize data into a standard way, that NPR can import.
    • The only suggestions I have is making the project a Github repository so the story, JSON and CSV can be versioned, forked and downloaded much more easily.
    • Additionaly, it would be pretty easy to add the ability for users to email their spreadsheets to a central email address, and programmatically convert to JSON, and CSV, then commit to the Github repository that contains the master JSON and CSV files. This way the repository administrator could accept or deny submissions as a pull request.
    • Using Excel As An API Datasource And An API Client For The Masses
    • APIs are all about getting access to the resources you need, and spreadsheets are being used by both API providers and consumers to accomplish these goals. It makes complete sense to me that business users would be looking for solutions via spreadsheets, as they are one potential doorway to hacking for the average person—writing macros, calculations, and other dynamic features people execute within the spreadsheet.
    • When it comes time to deploying APIs, this is the first place you should look for your datasources, resulting in Microsoft Excel and Google Spreadsheet to API solutions like we’ve seen from API Spark.
    • Microsoft Excel – Turning Microsoft Excel spreadsheets directly into APIs. by taking a spreadsheet, and generating an API is the fastest way to go from closed data resource to an API for anyone to access, even without programming experience.
    • Since Google Spreadsheets is web-based, it becomes very easy to use the Google Spreadsheet API to access any Spreadsheet in a Google account, then generate a web API interface that can allow for reading or writing to a spreadsheet data source via a public, or privately secured API.

    • There are five pages of recipes on the popular API reciprocity provider Zapier that allow you to work with Google Docs, and 57 pages that are dealing directly with Google Drive, providing a wealth of tools that non-developers (or developers) can use when connecting common APIs up to Google Spreadsheets.
